History
Housing Greensboro was originally formed in 2002 through a partnership between the Greensboro Housing Coalition, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, the Center to Create Housing Opportunities, the City of Greensboro and other interested individuals.

This occurred after a Housing Summit earlier that year in which a gap in housing services was identified to address substandard housing conditions.
The name chosen for the organization was to reflect the focus on “Housing” and that the need was identified by citizens of “Greensboro”. Housing Greensboro received IRS 501(c)3 tax exempt status in 2004 and launched the Home Repair Program under Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro.

Housing Greensboro completed 5 home repair projects in that first year and applied for designation by HUD as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) in 2005. A new Home Rehabilitation Program was started in 2006 when it completed its first house that was acquired, rehabbed and sold to a new homeowner.

In order to support the growing community need, an Executive Director was hired and Housing Greensboro was launched as an independent non-profit in April, 2007 as it began to expand its staff and capabilities with a continued strong partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro.

Housing Greensboro exists in response to a need that was identified by the community and confirmed by the City of Greensboro with its 2005-2009 Consolidated Housing and Community Development Plan.

They found:
  • 5,580 owner households with incomes less than 50% of Area Median Income (AMI)
  • 3,356 households experience some housing problem
  • High priority need for repairs to homes owned by elderly and low-income families
  • Need for at least 150 basic/emergency repairs during the 2005-2009 performance period

Housing Greensboro’s response has been to repair over 230 homes during this time and rehab 10 homes for resale back to low-income homeowners. We are excited to explore new ways to serve the community such as the pilot program with Advanced Energy amd A North Carolina Housing Finance Agency called Home Performance with Energy Star. The goal is to make homes more energy efficient while repairing them. We are excited about our past history and excited about what the future holds as we continue to engage volunteers and receive the financial support from our community to pursue our mission which changes lives.
